De Keten
'De Keten' is a project to promote inclusivity in the world of global classical music. 'De Keten' is an initiative of Oorkaan and intended for: everyone who feels committed to creating a diverse and inclusive classical music sector. This pilot focuses on institutions Amsterdam, but our ambition is to gradually appeal to a larger audience.
About The Chain
In recent years, the theme of diversity & inclusion has been high on the agenda of music company Oorkaan, as it is for many partners in the classical music sector. The common observation is that despite many initiatives, the audience in the hall, the musicians on stage and the staff behind the scenes and in the organizations do not currently reflect society.
Not only Oorkaan, but many venues, orchestras, ensembles, music schools and conservatories are struggling with this theme, which solutions will contribute to this urgent topic for the long term? We will have to take action together.

Course
The Chain is inspired by the American organization SPHINX:
“We transform lives through the power of diversity in the arts.” – Sphinx Music Detroit
Artistic director of Oorkaan Caecilia Thunnissen came to this organization through the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) in 2019. In February 2020 Oorkaan went to a conference of Sphinx in Detroit. The knowledge and inspiration gained led to the first ideas for De Keten: the idea of mobilizing 'the entire chain' for more diversity and inclusiveness in the classical music sector, both behind and in front of the scenes.
