Oorkaan meets TAoME: “Out of control – (shared) responsibility”
Oorkaan dedicates itself to the creation of high-quality staged concerts for young and emerging audiences. Our aim is to give everyone the opportunity to experience the power of live music. Our internationally awarded productions bring music from all over the world, performed by outstanding musicians. In 2021, we launched our very own Oorkaan Ensemble.
Co-creating musicians who move out of the box
Our dynamic staged concerts are created with the internationally recognized Oorkaan Method. Key to this approach is the collaborative relationship between the stage director and the musicians who co-create the visual narrative through the music itself.
At the Oorkaan Academy, musicians step out of the traditional “box”: they train in physical acting and learn to “play” two instruments simultaneously — their musical instrument and their bodies. Performing from memory allows them to leave their chairs, abandon the music stand, and move freely, interacting with each other and the audience.
With music as the script, the director relies on the musicians’ co-creative mindset, enabling them to convey ideas through sound and movement. Each staged concert becomes an engaging bridge between abstract music and relatable themes — such as relational dynamics, leadership, teamwork, and personal self-expression — especially resonating with younger audiences.
Our musicians communicate through their music, so language no problem.
Create your own radio play
Shared responsibility: an intergenerational workshop
With Oorkaan’s ‘Create Your Own Radio Play’ workshop, participants step into the world of sound and storytelling and become (co-)creators themselves. Participants work together to create a radio play by using music, dialogue and sound effects, shaping their own original story. Guided by Oorkaan’s experienced workshop leaders they explore these three essential elements of a radio play while developing their listening, creativity and collaboration skills. Through playing, singing, listening and improvisation participants shape their own story and bring it to life using a professional mobile recording studio. The finished radio plays will be shared online, allowing participants to revisit their creations and share them with family, friends, and wider audiences. Designed for classrooms, festivals, libraries, community centers and after-school programs, the workshop is both an inspiring artistic experience and a hands-on introduction to the power of sound, imagination and collective creation. Previous staged concerts, such as Kantjil en de Tijger with the Toneelmakerij and Studio Figur, included parent-child workshops, fostering intergenerational collaboration and creativity.

Music newly composed work by Guy Salamon, combined with his own existing jazz compositions
Drummer Guy and his musical companions Ton Felices (double bass) and Alistair Payne (trumpet) explore what it means to take the lead and when to follow. They hesitate and glance at one another. If no one begins, nothing happens… Who will dare?
Boss is a staged concert about leadership, collaboration and the freedom to find your own voice. A remarkable journey directed by Jochem Stavenuiter in which music leads the way.
