Oorkaan Ensemble invited to Indonesia by Dutch embassy
Tour dedicated to intercultural exchange and talent development
As part of a cross-cultural exchange, the Oorkaan Ensemble invited by the Dutch Embassy and the Erasmus House for a tour to Indonesia. From May 3 to 10, 2025, the ensemble will play Gong and the four noses (directed by Yorick Stam) for families in Jakarta, Yogjakarta and Surabaya.
To promote lasting cooperation between Indonesian and Dutch creators and musicians, reciprocal workshops and master classes will take place.
The Oorkaan musicians attend workshops in Indonesian gamelan - the traditional musical style - and in the shadow puppetry wajang kulit. Together with artistic director Caecilia Thunnissen, the ensemble gives master classes to musicians and creators in Indonesia in the Oorkaan Method, an internationally recognized method of creating and playing theatrical concerts. In this way, top international talent from both countries is developed.
The knowledge and inspiration gained will take clarinetist Michele Mazzini, harpist Michela Zanoni, bajanist Robbrecht Van Cauwenberghe and percussionist Veysel Dzhesur to the large hall co-production with De Toneelmakerij: Kantjil and the Tiger (directed by Paul Knieriem). Premiere: so Oct. 19, 2025 at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam. Then on tour throughout the country.
