How does it sound?
When you talk about music, you talk about time. And time is endless, especially when you're seven. Or seven-and-a-half, almost eight, next week, the day after tomorrow, tomorrow, one more night of sleep. And time disappears when you are sucked into a world full of wonder. It seems then to be the most infinite. Until it is suddenly over.
The members of the Oorkaan Ensemble tear through the musical dimension like experienced game avatars. They rush, jump, collide, run and come to a stop again. But who actually sets the tempo? The rhythms are flying around their ears! If only that goes well... Playing with notes, chords and each other, we take a journey through music full of unexpected twists and surprising musical levels. We turn left, right or miss a turn but always end up back on the same track.
As masters of their musical controllers, they master their instruments to perfection, playing Western classical in "Tempo," with pieces by Beethoven, Brahms and Vivaldi. As if that were not enough, they also unlock new levels with contemporary classical works composed especially for them by Martijn Padding. Unbound by sheet music, chairs, or other conventions with legs, they make time fly forward simultaneously and stand still for just under an hour. A theatrical concert like a black hole into which you are sucked. Until you fall out again at the end, on your seat in the concert hall.

Language No Problem
The music
After the successful productions 'Whoop Whoop(s)!', based on Turkish music, and 'Gong and the Four Noses', based on Indonesian gamelan, the Oorkaan Ensemble dives for this performance in the canon of Western classical music. Great composers for small ears. The Oorkaan Method has been making this a party for young and old for years! The program is packed with beautiful and timeless music written during the Renaissance, Baroque or Romantic periods, or just last week! In arrangements specially tailored for the special instrumentation of the Oorkaan Ensemble. A theatrical concert with original classical repertoire, in which listeners of all sizes will be surprised and enchanted.

Guest musician: Valentine Blangé
Valentine Blangé began her violin studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, and is currently pursuing master's studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Peter Brunt, Tjeerd Top and Tim Kliphuis. In addition to the classical repertoire, Valentine is very much into other styles, such as jazz and tango, as well as improvisation and composition. This led to first prize in the "Young Makers" category at the Dutch Violin Competition in 2022. Chamber music and orchestral playing are indispensable to Valentine. She was part of the academy of Amsterdam Sinfonietta in 2023, and plays regularly in the Metropole Orchestra. She also forms a regular duo with guitarist Cem Karayalçin.
World premiere: composition by Martijn Padding
Martijn Padding has specially created for Tempo and the Oorkaan Ensemble composed a new piece entitled "Oorkaan Tempi." This work consists of nine movements* in different instrumentations where each movement approaches the concept of tempo in different ways.
*Not all parts will be heard in Tempo.
Martijn Padding studied composition with Louis Andriessen, musicology at Utrecht University and piano with Fanio Chapiro. He has taught in the composition department of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague since 1996, of which he was the head for sixteen years until 2023. Although his compositions often have a musical (technical) premise, a theatrical element is increasingly present. The work is contrasting and, despite its sometimes outspoken and radical character, is very accessible. Padding is regularly composer in residence with orchestras and ensembles and central composer at festivals and companies (a.o. Loos ensemble, November Music, Veenfabriek, Gelders Orkest). In 2009 he won the Unesco Prize, in 2011 he received an Edison Klassiek and in 2016 the Johan Wagenaar Prize for his entire oeuvre. In 2020, Padding was awarded the Andreaspenning of the city of Amsterdam.

Rianne Meboer graduated from the Toneelacademie Maastricht and the Mime Opleiding Amsterdam where she developed into a versatile creator. She directed several youth operas with Holland Opera such as Odiezee! She also made performances with the brass players of Frisse Oren and for the Grachtenfestival, Over het IJ Festival and the MuziekSmederij. Rianne's work has a powerful simplicity in which performers flourish. She challenges them in a physical playing style and effortlessly weaves together image, music and movement. Rianne is inspired both by colorful abstract modern art in which everything seems to be right and slapstick in which everything accidentally goes wrong. She is also connected to the Theaterstraat where she makes social-artistic work from Amsterdam Noord.
