The Suleikas and the Mystery of the Sensitive String
How does
WHAT DOES FALLING IN LOVE SOUND LIKE? At The Suleikas and the Mystery of the Sensitive String everything goes a little differently than you expect. Emmy wants to play alone, but then Pepijn and Maarten sneak on stage and together they play the Suleika. Cellist Pepijn turns out to be a secret magician and suddenly the balls fly around their ears. And when the violin and cello sound in love with each other, pianist Maarten gets jealous. And why does he have his hand in the bandage? Is that the singing saw's fault?
A surprising concert - directed by Jochem Stavenuiter (mime theater group Bambie) - full of comical scenes, painful situations and unexpected magic tricks with music from Mozart to Piazzolla, from Chaplin to Ravel.
On the stage
Maarten den Hengst piano
Emmy Storms violin
Pepijn Meeuws cello
Trio Suleika was founded in 2002 by Pepijn Meeuws and Maurice Lammerts van Bueren. One of the leading piano trios in the Netherlands, the ensemble has won the Concertgebouw's Vriendenkrans and the Kersjes Prize, among others. Not coincidentally, Trio Suleika chooses passionate repertoire full of opposites, with classical works, new compositions and surprising adaptations. The ensemble took its name from Goethe's work, in which the character "Suleika" symbolizes love, full of both happiness and pain. In 2011 Trio Suleika and pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren created this Oorkaan production, which was played for four seasons in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. For the revival this season, cellist Pepijn Meeuws and violinist Emmy Storms will play with pianist Maarten den Hengst.

Make your own sensitive strings
Take a wooden or plastic box, such as a fresh food container, and remove the lid. Stretch (plastic) rubber bands around this, for example thin and thick rubber bands. Try stretching one rubber band tighter around the box than the other. Now pluck the "strings" yourself. How do they sound? Do they all sound the same? Or does one sound nicer than the other? Do they strike a sensitive chord with you? Now you have created your own stringed instrument. Have fun playing the strings!

Color the nuts in love!
Download HERE A fun coloring page from The Suleikas and the Mystery of the Sensitive String.
What do you see? What string instruments do you recognize? Who are in love with each other? And who would be jealous?
Also, write some music or lyrics of your own on the stave. Do you already know who you are going to give it to? Have fun coloring!
