Musicians
Mehmet Polat is a ud player, composer, ensemble leader and soloist. With his ensemble the Mehmet Polat trio, he has gained fame and completed many international tours. Through improvisation, his own compositions and his perspective on the diversity of musical styles, Mehmet is constantly looking for new musical paths and inspiration. He has developed his own technique to see beyond the limitations of his once traditional instrument. With his new left hand technique, he plays more modern and more advanced pieces of music. He has also developed his own ud with two extra bass strings to increase the range and function of his instrument.
Maria-Paula studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Musikhochschule in Freiburg. She has won prizes at several competitions, including the Davina van Wely competition. Maria-Paula is the primarius of the Matangi Quartet. In 2002 they were awarded the prestigious Kersjes Prize. The Matangi Quartet has shared the stage with famous artists such as Tania Kross, Ivo Janssen, Paolo Giacometti and Severin von Eckardstein.
Singer-songwriter Juliëtte van Dijk makes rounded songs, small narrative observations with an important place for lyrics. Sincerely surprised or slightly amused, compassionate or questioning, she looks at the world and translates what she sees into music. Apart from English and Dutch, Juliette likes to sing original songs in other languages/sound idioms, including e.g. Bulgarian, Indian, Gaelic, Farsi and Arabic. She is also the initiator of a Haarlem festival with workshops on singing, harvesting, cooking and eating.
Moussé says he was surrounded by music since he was born. Every month there was a "Djalifoli" at his home. The important instruments for this celebration, such as the djembé, talking drum, doundoun, kora, kamalinkoné, bolon, xalam and the calabashes in water were always with the family. Moussé remembers a huge djembé, which all the children in the family loved. He was like a piece of gold to them. Since 1998, Moussé has lived in Amsterdam, and in 1999 he and his wife Turid Dramé set up the company Djembé Dramé. He also conducts workshops in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, the United States, Switzerland to China where they have since discovered him.
Sanne Bijker has been cellist and artistic coordinator of Cello Octet Amsterdam since 2004. Cello Octet Amsterdam consists of eight cellists and is a household name in the international music world. The octet stands for new music and successful crossovers between different musical styles and artistic disciplines. Thus the Octet has performed more than 70 world premieres, most dedicated to the Octet, by Xenakis, Gubaidulina, Pärt, Loevendie, Riley, Kagel and Glass, among others. Arvo Pärt said after premiering his piece for the Octet, "The Octet is golden, I discovered this ensemble 10 years too late."
Ties Mellema is a boundary-pushing saxophonist who dabbles in all styles of music from classical to jazz and world music. He arranges, teaches and performs while also exploring interfaces with dance and theater. At the age of eight, Ties decided to play the saxophone. He later graduated cum laude from the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Arno Bornkamp. As one of the founding members, he played for a long time in the Amstel Quartet. Ties has collaborated with many prominent musicians, including Remy van Kesteren and Gustavo Dudamel. In 2010, he won the Dutch Music Prize.
