Oorkaan: internationally operating youth performing arts company in Amsterdam

With theatrical concerts merging music and theater, Oorkaan has been opening the world of music to young and new audiences around the world for nearly 25 years. Oorkaan collaborates with chamber music ensembles like HIIIT, AAO, Guy Salamon Group and Vernon Chatlein & Friends, with orchestras like the Concertgebouw Orchestra and Philzuid, and partners like the Salzburg Festival, Theater Orpheus and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. Since 2021, Oorkaan has had its own ensemble, bringing an explosion of musical and theatrical expression to the stage. Oorkaan productions play for families and schools in theaters, concert halls and festivals throughout the Netherlands and from Ghent to Jakarta.

Since the beginning of this year, Oorkaan joined the cultural Basic Infrastructure (BIS). As of May 1 this year, we switched from an executive board to a supervisory board model. Caecilia Thunnissen has assumed the role of director-director. The team of about 8 employees and 4 employed musicians and a pool of about 80 freelance musicians, directors, workshop leaders, composers, technicians and production leaders each year work from a shared passion for music, theater and education. About the Supervisory Board

A complementary Supervisory Board is indispensable for cultural institutions. It is a crucial control body that keeps the management on its toes. It monitors the mission and vision, financial health, risk management and compliance with laws and regulations. The Council oversees a healthy balance between artistic ambitions and business reality and advises the management on important strategic decisions. It acts as a sounding board and also dares to ask critical questions. In this way, the Supervisory Board contributes to the sustainability and social value of the cultural institution.

What we offer you

  • The opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to an innovative and international company, to the development of young and new audiences and young musicians and creators;

In Geert van Meerveld, Oorkaan has found a very experienced supervisor who will further compose the new supervisory board as chairman. Geert has expertise in finance, organizational issues and personnel. In this context, we are looking for two new members in the short term, preferably:

  • for the role of SECRETARY a person with preferably a legal background and knowledge of the cultural governance code and the political field.
  • A person with expertise in the field of PROGRAMMING & MARKETING of theaters, concert halls and/or festivals.

We are looking for people with:

  • A vision for cultural diversity and inclusion;
  • The ability to advise constructively;
  • Preferably a network within the social domain, education, politics and/or cultural sector;
  • possibly experience with administrative and/or supervisory positions in the nonprofit sector.

Once the SB consists of three supervisors, in a second phase they will seek two members to supplement the then missing knowledge, expertise and diversity on the board to form a five-member SB.
